フィンランド大学院出願のモチベーションレター公開！奨学金は？

ここでは、私のフィンランド大学院出願の体験記を公開します。(2021年版）

こちらは大学院出願記です。学部の進学はまた状況が違う可能性があります。

何校くらい出願すればいいの？

もちろん、出願校が１校だけだと、落ちた時に行き場がなくなりますので、

できるだけ多くの大学に出願するに越したことはありません！

私は、フィンランドの大学の中で興味のあるプログラムが２つしかなかったため、

２つの大学に出願しました。

１つ受かって、１つ落ちました（笑）

奨学金ってもらいやすいの？

フィンランドの大学院の授業料は、昔はタダでしたが、今はタダではありません。

”EU圏外の国から来る人” かつ ”英語のプログラムに出願する人”は、授業料を払わなければなりません。

プログラムによって変わりますが、study in Finland によると、

授業料は、だいたい１年間で4000€（51万8千円くらい）～18000€（233万3千円くらい）のようです。

ちなみに、授業料を払わなければならないのは、学部生と大学院生だけ。博士課程は、完全タダだし、場合によってはお給料ももらえるよ。

しかし！私たちには「奨学金」という切り札があります！

授業料を払わなければならない人（EU圏外からかつ英語のプログラムに出願する人）は、

全員奨学金へ応募する権利を持っています。

奨学金の形態は大学によって異なりますが、だいたいは授業料免除で、

出願時のスコアが高い志願者順に、授業料100％免除、授業料80%免除…が割り当てられます。

これは返済不要の奨学金です。

大学が提供する奨学金への応募は、出願と同時に行います。

この奨学金は、入学時に勝ち取るものではありますが、

入学後に以下のような条件を満たさないと剥奪されます。

留年せずに卒業する（例えば、大学院だと2年以内）
１学期に最低〇単位取る（例えば、私の学部だと55単位）　など。

ヨーロッパの学生は2年以内に卒業する必要がないから、みんなのびのび勉強してて正直うらやましい…。やはり私には「この授業落としたら授業料全額請求される…！」といつも切迫感が付きまとう。

2022/6/21追記：

私は、２年以内に卒業しなかった場合は、奨学金が剥奪され、

2年間分の学費も全額支払わなければならないことになる と勘違いしていたようですが、そうではないようです。

こちらの方の記事によりますと、留年した場合でも、

大学院2年目までは奨学金は適用され、留年開始3年目以降から通常の授業料を支払わなければならなくなる、ようです。

ただ、この３年目以降の授業料をも回避する必要がありまして、

それはビザをBビザからAビザに変えること。詳しくはこちらの方の記事へ。

さて、果たして奨学金はもらいやすいのかどうかですが、

私の超個人的な感想としては「結構、もらいやすい」。

私の周りにいる、フィンランドの大学院に進んだ人（といっても、たったの２人ですが）は、

授業料100%免除と、80%免除を受けています。

私も、出願時のスコアはすごく低かったのにも関わらず、100%免除を頂きました。

私の考察としては、

私の出願したプログラムの定員は10名だったのですが、

その中にきっとEU圏外からの人がほとんどいなかったのではないかと…！

「こいつ出願スコア低いけど、他に奨学金やる相手もいないし、こいつにくれてやるか！」

という感じで、100%免除をもらえたのではないでしょうか…。

というわけで、EU圏外からの応募者が少ないプログラムでは奨学金をもらいやすいかもしれません。

（その大学が毎年の出願者の統計を公表していなければ、EU圏外からの応募者が少ないかどうかはわかりませんが…）

ただし、私の先輩は「昔は出願者ほぼ全員が奨学金を受け取れたけど、今は年々難しくなってきている気がする！」とおっしゃっています。

これはただの私の主観的な考察ということをお忘れなく。

出願のスコアについて

出願時のスコアというのは、だいたい

「大学の成績」、「モチベーションレターの内容」、

「大学時代の勉強分野と、大学院で勉強したい分野につながりがあるかどうか（一貫性）」

で決まります。

社会人経験のある人は、大学時代の勉強内容と、仕事内容と、大学院で勉強したい分野の間につながりをもたせよう

３つ目の「一貫性」が、だいたい配点が高めです。

それゆえ、学部時代の勉強分野と、大学院の勉強分野のつながりが薄いと、少し不利になります。

例えば、学部時代は教育学部だったのに、大学院で生物学のプログラムに出願する、となると

スコアが低くなる可能性があるのです。

「なぜ教育学から生物学に乗り換えようと思ったのか」というストーリーは、

モチベーションレターで説明できますが、

いくらうまいストーリーを立てられたとしても、それは「モチベーションレター」の配点が高くなるのであって、

「一貫性」の配点にはあまり影響しないようです。

私がこう思う理由は、私のモチベーションレターにはかなり自信があった

（大学の英語ネイティブのアカデミックライティング専門の教授にも直すところがないと言われた）

のにも関わらず、

出願のスコアがとても低かったことにあります。

学部の成績もそんなに悪いわけではない（と思う泣）ので、やはり「一貫性」の点で減点されたのではないかと…。

私の学部はいわゆる「なんでも学部」で、出願したフィンランドの大学院のプログラムとは何のつながりもなかったのです。

フィンランドの大学院に行った先輩の一人も、なんでも学部出身の方なのですが、

おれも学部で勉強した分野と今の専門分野は全っ然違うよ！（笑）
でも、学士論文の内容と、会社で働いてた内容を、頑張って大学院の内容に結びつけたらなんとかなったよ。
モチベーションレターでやる気を示せば意外となんでもありかもしれない。

と言っていました。

出願時のスコアという点では、「一貫性」の点で大きく減点されるかもしれませんが、

モチベーションレターの内容が良くできていれば合格はできる、といったところでしょうか。

こちらの記事でお話した通り、アメリカの大学院などは「コネがすべて」と言われており、

現地の教授と事前に仲良くなっておくことが、院出願の大前提とされています。

私の大学の指導教員もそう考えて、私に、フィンランドの大学の現地の教授（お友達）を紹介してくれました。

というわけで１年間、共同研究をして、それを論文にし、

院出願時もモチベーションレターでそのことをアピールしたのですが、

おたくの大学のお偉い先生と共同研究したんですよ！！私！！ってアピール

結局その大学のプログラムには落ちました（笑）

フィンランドの大学院の出願には、推薦書がないので、モチベーションレターでアピールするしかありません。

アメリカの大学院では、現地の教授と仲良くなって、その方に推薦書を書いてもらえば、

「ほぼほぼ合格」らしいですが、

フィンランドでは通用しないようです。

かといって、ちょっとしたアピールポイントにはなると思うので、

現地の先生を紹介してもらえる人は、紹介してもらった方が良いでしょう。

他には、インターンシップ等もアピールポイントとしておすすめです。（私はしてないけど）

モチベーションレターの内容を公開

さて、私の恥ずかしいモチベーションレターを公開します…

こちらは落ちた大学のモチベーションレターですが、一応プロの方に添削してもらってあります。

受かった大学の方も公開したいのですが、大学からなにか言われるかもしれないので、しばらくは載せません。（どちらにせよ、受かった方は添削してもらっていません）

あまり参考にせず、「こんな風に書いたらいいのかー」とイメージをつかむのに使ってもらえたら本望です。

なお、モチベーションレターの質問内容は、各大学によって異なりますのでご注意を。

当然ですが、以下の内容をコピーしてそのまま使用することは厳禁です！

モチベーションレター

a) なぜこのプログラムに出願したんですか？

During my study exchange in Finland, I became fascinated by the psychologically strong relationship between Finnish people and nature. I am particularly interested in the benefits people can acquire from nature, such as stress reduction and improved learning abilities in the case of children. To that end, I want to use ○○programme to explore, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the development of opportunities for urbanites to be exposed to nature.

b) 学部での勉強は、この大学院のプログラムにどのように貢献できますか？

The College of ○○ at ○○ University, where I completed my bachelor’s degree, is a pioneer in Japanese education. Departing from traditional learning styles, they were early advocates of the importance of acquiring knowledge from a wide range of subjects. Throughout my studies, I have gained multifaceted perspectives for various global issues, interdisciplinary knowledge from diverse course options, such as environmental studies, sociology and design, and the ability to critically think about the conventional norms in society.

I started pursuing socio-ecological issues when I studied abroad in Finland for a year. I became deeply fascinated by the Finns’ close relations with nature, as well as the interactions between humans and nature. Through investigating the association between wellbeing and nature, I have become more aware of what nature offers to humans and how much humans are dependent on it. After my exchange, I set out to research the following question: how can we preserve the opportunities for urban residents to acquire cultural ecosystem services for wellbeing improvements? With this question in mind, I initially focused on analyzing (学部で、卒業論文の前に取り組んだ論文の研究内容）.

I then conducted my dissertation, with Professor ○○ from ○○ University, about ○○; the project investigated （卒業論文の内容）. Given the scope of my previous studies, I believe I have the foundational knowledge to further tackle my research question about exposing urban dwellers to nature, whilst discovering and discussing other related topics in detail.

c) この大学院のプログラムでの勉強は、あなたの学部での勉強をどのように補完し、知識を発展させますか？

Researching with Professor ○○, one of the most authoritative researchers in ○○ studies, was a great opportunity to witness the technical difficulties associated with installing green infrastructures in（地域名）’s climate. The ○○ programme will allow me to draw on this experience and continue to develop a comprehensive knowledge base about green infrastructure. My primary interest is exploring the psychological benefits of green spaces for urban residents, although, the ○○ course will also complement my previous interdisciplinary studies; developing sustainable green infrastructure is impossible without an interdisciplinary approach.

Furthermore, I am sure the programme will broaden my knowledge, particularly due to its location. Green infrastructure research in Finland has accelerated in the past couple of years due to the impact of natural disasters on cities. Living where I can witness increasingly active interactions between labs and green infrastructure sites while gaining theoretical and practical expertise from green roof professionals, should make for an excellent learning environment. Also, I am particularly curious to learn more, first-hand, about the close psychological distance of Finnish people to nature. What kind of recreations and experiences in nature intrigue Finnish people? Why is nature not just scenery but a part of Finnish identity? Answering these questions will illuminate how green infrastructures may improve urban life.

d) この大学院プログラムでの勉強は、あなたのキャリアにどう結びつきますか？この大学院プログラムを修了することは、どんな学術的・専門的なゴールに結びつくのでしょうか？

I primarily aim to accumulate my skills and knowledge from the programme in a dissertation that suggests the optimal urban green space design to enhance the restorative effects of plants, by comparing types of exposure to nature with positive psychological impacts. The （コース名） are particularly relevant to reaching my objective of discussing the nature-based solutions and theoretical concepts of urban ecology.

With a view to merging my academic and professional goals, I am strongly considering developing this research theme in a doctoral course. I would investigate how urban green space design can be optimized for increasing children’s time spent in nature. While many papers, such as the informative *‘Green schoolyards as havens from stress and resources for resilience in childhood and adolescence’ (Chawla et al., 2014), have stated the benefits of nature on the development of children, the time children spend in nature is decreasing. This is often the case for children living in cities in Japan, with limited green spaces and long distances from natural environments. Increasingly important urban green infrastructures enable cities to provide nature’s benefits to urban dwellers.

Ultimately, with the research and analytical skills that I will gain in this programme, I hope to become an interdisciplinary researcher supporting the implementation of ideal green spaces and advocating for the importance of nature in improving childhood wellbeing.

I will pursue the （プログラム名）programme. Throughout the 2 years, my study and research will be focused on the uses and benefits of urban green infrastructure, in order to positively influence the wellbeing of urban residents.

In the first year from 202× (autumn) to 202× (spring), I would like to mainly focus on courses to develop my methodology skills in preparation for further research. As well as the compulsory modules, I expect the following modules to be the most appropriate and useful for my research goals: （授業名１）, （授業名２）, （授業名３）, （授業名４）, （授業名５）, （授業名６）, and （授業名７）. For my master’s thesis, I will conduct some preliminary research, such as gathering materials for a literature review, at the beginning of the semester. This will enable me to develop my dissertation plan in good time to allow for changes and potential setbacks. I then hope to join a research group led by Professor ○○ and I will eagerly attend all the discussions in her group. When writing my research proposal, I will also create a timeline to guide me in completing each section of the dissertation. Following on from this, in line with my research proposal, I will carry out research that will probably be questionnaire-based, before analyzing the results.

奨学金用モチベーションレター(?)

Throughout my ○○programme study, I will be eager to gain knowledge in the use of green infrastructures for realizing sustainable urban planning with nature-based solutions and the practical expertise from world-leading professors in the field of urban nature. Making the most of what I will learn through the experiences, I hope to contribute to a better understanding of the design of urban green space for enhancing the provision of positive psychological effects on urban dwellers. While some recent studies in Finland have investigated the expectation for the use of urban green spaces and their recreational benefits for urban residents, the empirical research on the design of green infrastructure in terms of optimizing the psychological effects of plants is still scarce for putting into practice. In recent years, green infrastructure research in Finland has accelerated and more research data is needed for planning successful and sustainable green infrastructure in urban cities. My studies, with the interests in the use of cultural ecosystem services, such as restorative and stress-reducing impacts of plants, would encourage research in terms of improving the wellbeing and comfort of urban life with nature-based solutions.

The University of ○○ is my first choice, not only because it offers one of the top educations and authoritative professors, but also the interdisciplinary course options and the active learning environment. Professor ○○ is one of the most renowned researchers in the various fields of green infrastructure. Joining her active research group would greatly encourage me in gaining expertise in the inclusive and field-transcending analysis of urban green infrastructure. In addition, the multidisciplinary approach of the programme would further strengthen the inclusive perspectives that I gained through my Bachelor degree in （学部名）. This diverse knowledge would enable me to analyze the use of urban green space in system thinking and the findings in the research to be more connected to the sites.

I currently wish to pursue my research onto a doctoral degree to further develop my research interest in the psychological effects of the natural environment in Finland. However, in order to continue this long-term study abroad, I would need to find work to pay for the education. Due to my family’s economic hardships, I would like to lessen the financial burden as much as possible as well. The scholarship will strengthen my opportunities to aim for higher education by providing me with time for devoting myself to study and reaching out to experiences outside of the university, such as internships and volunteering. Overall, this scholarship will certainly support me to achieve my current goal, which is to expand my research in doctoral study and contribute to realizing better urban life in the future.
